With the passage by Congress of a bill banning partial-birth abortions, and the veto of that bill by President Clinton, we offer the following quotes from a variety of Christian leaders.

DR. A. L. BARRY, LUTHERAN CHURCH-MISSOURI SYNOD

“President Clinton,... "Your veto of this bill sends a message that our society regards human life as of little value. We view this as a severe violation of the government's responsibility from God to protect and defend human life. Your veto will contribute to the further erosion of our nation's moral character. "

JOSEPH CARDINAL BERNARDIN, ARCHBISHOP OF CHICAGO

"For over 10 years, I have preached the importance of a consistent ethic of life..... [This ethic] serves as an instrument for evaluating the service of our elected officials with regard to life issues, including abortion. It is not enough to say that one is opposed to abortion or to say that abortion should be 'safe, legal and rare.‘ l regret to say that while I and my brother bishops are consistent, the president is not."

GARY BAUER, PRESIDENT, FAMILY RESEARCH COUNCIL

"Clinton's veto ... of the partial-birth abortion bill is still a shocker ... The president says he wants abortion to be rare, but there is not one of the 1.5 million abortions that take place each year that he would prevent, or restrict."

JEAN GARTON, CO-FOUNDER OF LUTHERANS FOR LIFE

"When the President vetoed the ban on partial-birth abortions, he said he did so after praying about it 'for many months.’ To which god does one pray for approval to cruelly puncture a child's skull? From what god does one seek blessing for suctioning out the brains of a child just moments away from taking its first breath? Not the Creator God of Holy Scripture!...Not the Redeeming God who said, “Be careful not to despise these little ones.’"

MICHAEL FERGUSON, CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR AMERICA

"Catholic Americans will not forget in November that we need a president who will promote a respect for all human life."

DR. RICHARD LAND, SOUTHERN BAPTIST CONVENTION

"...if there is a distinction between being pro-choice and pro-abortion, President Clinton has crossed the line into the pro-abortion camp."

ANTHONY CARDINAL BEVILACQUA, ARCHBISHOP OF PHILADELPHIA

"I am profoundly appalled over President Clinton's veto of the ban on partial-birth abortions. It is a very sad day for our country when the President of the United States endorses killing children in the very process of being born. The culture of death is certainly upon us."
